A VISIT FROM THE KIDS AT BLACK CANYON ANIMAL SANCTUARY

Each year Debbie Faulkner founder of Black Canyon Animal Sanctuary holds a camp for kids.  This year she had a total of 22 kids attending this week long camp, where they camp on the property, are each paired up with a rescue dog at the facility and most importantly are taught how important it is to have compassion for animals.  We applaud what Debbie does and the difference that it makes not only for these kids but for all animals in the future that happen to cross their paths.  We were extremely happy to have all these wonderful children visit one of our foster homes, the horses were a little alarmed should we say when they saw this sea of bodies walking onto their pasture, but they were way to curious to stay away and found themselves being loved on by quite a large array on youngsters, they certainly seemed to love the attention.  It was also great to be able to share our story and that of our horses and all those forgotten horses out there. Thanks for visiting!

SPIRIT WIND HORSES TAKE PART IN "TRUE GRIT DAYS" HELD AT THE MUSEUM OF THE MOUNTAIN WEST IN MONTROSE

On June 5, 2010, three of our wonderful rescue horses, Red, Cassie and Jazz made us proud as they took part in True Grit Days which was held at the Museum of the Mountain West as a tribute to Western Movies Day.  Red was ridden by Ermal Williamson, a John Wayne impersonator and Jazz was ridden by Paula, Americas Yodeling Sweetheart.  A great day was had by all, thank you to our volunteers who helped us load and transport horses early hours of the morning as well as tending to our booth.  And thank you to our horses who did such a great job. All three of these horses are looking for their forever homes.

THANK YOU TO THE ASPCA FOR THEIR GRANT TO HELP US WITH OUR GELD YOUR COLT PROGRAM

Spirit Wind Horse Rescue will be starting a new program called Geld Your Colt.  Thank to a grant from the ASPCA, we are finally able to put this program in place; and we hope that in the future it will grow to a point where we will be able to help more Delta County Residents and their horses. Our goal is to diminish the number of unwanted horses in Delta County.

We realize that due to the economy, the thought of finding the money to geld ones colt is probably very far from the minds of horse owners, who are struggling to just feed their horses.  However we are hoping that this program will be able to ease that situation a little, by having Spirit Wind Horse Rescue pay for half the surgery for those willing and wanting to geld their colts.  Spirit Wind Horse Rescue will also consider gelding older studs, depending on age and health of the horse, which will be determined by the veterinarians taking part in this program.

There seems to be a trend in the growing amount of neglect cases, abandonment cases and the growing rate of healthy horses sent to Mexico for slaughter.

If you would like an application or further information regarding this program please either email spiritwind@tds.net for an application or call Beth Keenan at 921 5646

KIDS PASTA PROJECT

In November the Kids Pasta Project hosted a dinner for Spirit Wind Horse Rescue.  Kids serve the community every week by preparing and serving a freshly-made pasta dinner and donating the profits to local causes.

It was a great success and here is the excerpt from their Newsletter.

Last week's dinner
